OK

You can be on unemployment benefits and apply for jobs from abroad.

When you are unemployed, you can look for a job while you are abroad for up to three months. You can do this if you travel to another EEA country. See list of EEA countries

How to secure unemployment benefits in an EEA country

To be entitled to unemployment benefits while looking for work in another EEA country, you must be fully unemployed, reside in Denmark and be registered with the job center for at least four weeks before you leave. In addition, it is important that you are available to the labor market and are looking for work in Denmark until you leave.

Deviation from the four weeks

In special cases, it is possible to travel with EEA unemployment benefit before you have been unemployed for 4 weeks. You can do this if:

  • you are a citizen of the country you are going to (only 1 week of unemployment required).
  • you are starting a new job in another EEA country.
  • your spouse or cohabiting partner is moving to start a new job or education.
  • you are going for a job interview in another EEA country.

How to apply to apply for jobs from abroad

You must apply to look for a job from abroad while receiving unemployment benefits. You apply by filling out the EEA 1 form at least 14 days before you leave, and preferably 4 weeks before. It may affect your entitlement to unemployment benefits if you have not received approval from us before you leave. You can find the form in Self Service.

Refusal of EEA unemployment benefits

Your application for EEA unemployment benefit will be rejected if:

  • you do not meet the conditions of being unemployed in Denmark long enough.
  • you are still covered by an employment relationship in Denmark (also on reduced hours).
  • you are not staying in Denmark on the stated departure date.
  • the unemployment insurance fund only receives the application after you have traveled to the other EEA country.
  • you are not available to the labor market in Denmark prior to departure.
  • an activity has been agreed with the job center in Denmark during the period.

When you arrive

You must register with the job center in the EEA country you are traveling to within 7 days of your departure date. If you register later, you can only receive unemployment benefits from the day you register. During your stay, you must be actively available for work according to the rules of the EEA country where you are looking for work.

Remember the 3-month deadline

If you do not find work in the other EEA country, it is important that you are back in Denmark and register with your local job center before the 3-month deadline expires.

If you have received EEA unemployment benefit before

If you have previously received EEA unemployment benefits, you must have worked at least 296 hours within 3 months (148 hours for part-time insured) in order to use the scheme again.
