There are several ways to stop running your own business. These include:

• If you close your business
• If you sell your business
• If you lease out your business
• If you leave the business, which is continued by others
• If the company has gone bankrupt
• If the company is closed and in liquidation.

Before you stop being self-employed

If you wish to cease self-employment and receive unemployment benefits, we always recommend that you begin by contacting us. We can assist you with the unemployment benefit rules and what documentation is required when closing your business.

If, for example, you are leaving a company that is being taken over by your spouse or cohabiting partner, you must both sign a sworn statement confirming that you have left the company.

Daily allowance after you stop being self-employed

As a rule, you can receive unemployment benefits three weeks after you have ceased operating your business. However, in the event of bankruptcy or foreclosure, you can receive benefits after only one week.

If you are having problems closing your business with SKAT and the Danish Business Authority, you can terminate it on the basis of a sworn statement. You can then submit documentation proving that you have terminated the business. In that case, you can receive unemployment benefits after two months.
