Rules and rates

Do you have a much-needed vacation coming up? Looking forward to relaxing, putting your feet up and forgetting about job hunting and work? We don't blame you. Jobs and applications are important, but so is taking a vacation.

Here you will find information about what to do when you are on unemployment benefit and want to take a vacation. You can also find out what to do if you are in work and are not entitled to paid vacation or holiday allowance for the entire holiday, but may be entitled to holiday allowance.

How to earn holiday pay entitlement

You continuously earn the right to holiday pay as long as you receive unemployment benefit from Min A-kasse or parental benefit from Udbetaling Danmark.

For every month that you receive unemployment benefits for 160.33 hours as a full-time insured person, you earn 2.08 vacation days. If you are insured part-time, you earn vacation days when you receive unemployment benefits for 130 hours. If you are paid for fewer hours, you earn correspondingly fewer vacation days.

Holiday allowance covers lost work income or unemployment benefit on days when you are on vacation. Please contact us if you are in doubt.

You can receive holiday allowance regardless of whether you are unemployed or employed. In Self Service, you can keep track of how many days of holiday pay you have earned and spent.

Conditions you need to fulfill

In order to receive holiday allowance, you must be a member of an unemployment insurance fund and meet a number of conditions:

  • You must be eligible for unemployment benefits in case of unemployment, which also means that you must be available for work if you were unemployed.
  • You are going on vacation.
  • You must be employed or unemployed immediately before the holiday.
  • You must have taken all your accrued vacation with holiday pay or salary according to the Holiday Act.

Are you self-employed as a second job? Then you can also receive holiday allowance during your vacation, as long as you meet the other conditions.

If you are an employee

To be entitled to holiday pay as an employee, you must, among other things

  • Take a vacation.
  • Be entitled to unemployment benefits at the time of the vacation.
  • Have earned the right to holiday pay.
  • Be a member of a Danish unemployment insurance fund, both during the accrual of the holiday allowance and at the time of payment.
  • As a starting point, you should have taken any vacation you may have earned with an employer.
  • Be resident in Denmark or in another EEA country and be in Denmark when the holiday begins.

Payout and rate

Holiday allowance is usually paid at the same rate as your unemployment benefit.

If you have not been unemployed, you will receive a calculated rate. The calculation is done in the same way as if you were receiving unemployment benefits, but without the additional rate. Read more and unemployment benefit rates.

Apply for holiday allowance

Holiday allowance is not paid automatically. You can send your application via Self Service.

If you are unemployed, you must send your application no later than the first day of your vacation.

If you are employed, you must submit your application no later than January 31 after the holiday year ends on December 31.

Situations when you can't get holiday pay

You are not entitled to holiday allowance if, at the start of the holiday, you

  • Do not have an unemployment benefit entitlement.
  • Staying abroad, regardless of whether you maintain your residence in Denmark, unless you live in an EEA country and work in Denmark.
  • Is self-employed as main occupation.
  • Are enrolled in an education program - unless the educational institution is closed and the program is not SU-eligible.
  • I'm on sick leave.
  • Is on maternity leave.
  • Is in custody.
  • Is on early retirement.
  • Is in a senior job.
Remember to give notice at least 14 days before your vacation starts

If you are unemployed, don't forget to report your holiday to either the unemployment fund or the job center.

If you take vacation within the first three months of your unemployment, you must report your vacation to the unemployment fund.

If you take vacation after the first three months of your unemployment, you must report your vacation to the job center.

If you have reported your vacation in time, you do not need to attend interviews or activities at the job center or unemployment fund during the vacation period, unless you have already received a summons. If you forget to report your vacation and decline a job offer because of your vacation, you will be quarantined. This quarantine cannot be lifted while on vacation.

Always remember to indicate your vacation on the benefit card.

If you get sick before vacation

If you have already been paid holiday allowance for your holiday, you must notify My Unemployment Fund so we can decide if the money should be paid back.

If you are unemployed, you must also notify the job center. When you recover and want to take your holiday at a different time, you must inform the job center at least 14 days before the new holiday starts. If you do not attend interviews with the job center, it is the unemployment fund that you must notify about the holiday. You can apply for holiday allowance again when you want to take a new vacation.

If you are in education

You can receive holiday allowance if you are in education as part of a job plan and your holiday is stated in My Plan.

You can receive daily allowance when the place of study is closed for vacation, or holiday allowance if you want to take a vacation.

Check for mail on the last day of vacation

If you are unemployed and have reported a vacation, please note that you are obliged to check your mail in sufficient time before the end of your vacation so that you can start work or an activity on the first working day after your vacation.

Workplace with collective holiday closure

If your workplace is closed due to a collective holiday, you can in some cases receive unemployment benefits while the company is closed.

To receive unemployment benefits during collective holiday closures, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You must be prevented from working because the workplace has a collective holiday closure.
  • You must have taken all your accrued vacation from your employer and any days with holiday pay from the unemployment fund.
  • Your employer must have given timely notice of the holiday closure. This means three months before the main holiday and one month before other holidays, unless otherwise agreed in your contract or collective agreement.
  • You must register with the job center and be available for work - even if it's just for a few days.
  • You must meet the general conditions to be eligible for unemployment benefits.

If you meet these conditions, you can receive unemployment benefits for the weekdays you would otherwise have been paid. Please note that a company can only have a collective holiday closure for up to 5 weeks according to the Holiday Act. If the holiday closure is longer, it is not a collective holiday closure.

Earned vacation

When you are employed, you earn 2.08 vacation days every month, regardless of how many hours you work. If you are employed for less than a month, you earn 0.07 vacation days for every day you are employed.

Holiday pay that you have earned in an employment relationship must generally be used before you can receive holiday allowance.

If you do not receive a salary during your holiday, but your holiday pay is transferred to FerieKonto or another scheme, you can apply for your own earned holiday at Feriepengeinfo at Borger.dk.

If you are unemployed, accrued vacation will be deducted from your unemployment benefit, so you will be deducted 7.4 hours of unemployment benefit per day of vacation. Part-time insured will be deducted 6 hours per vacation day.

Your holiday entitlement changes continuously, so we cannot calculate in advance how many days you can receive holiday pay. We can only make a final calculation on the day we process your application for holiday pay. If you have applied for holiday allowance prior to your holiday, we can process your application no earlier than 10 days before your holiday starts. The number of days earned at the time of processing determines how many days you are entitled to. Once we have processed your application, you will receive a letter from us with information about how many days you may be entitled to holiday pay.

Holiday year and holiday entitlement

You earn your right to holiday allowance in the period from September 1 to August 31 the following year - called the holiday year. The holiday year runs for 12 months.

The accrued vacation can be taken in the period from September 1 to December 31 the following year - called the vacation year. The vacation year runs for 16 months.

If you have not earned holiday pay

Since vacation is accrued continuously, you may find yourself in a situation where you want to take a vacation without having accrued vacation from an employer or holiday pay from an unemployment fund.

Even if you have not earned your vacation, you can still take it. The holiday will initially be taken at your own expense. If you later earn holiday allowance, for example, you will be able to have it paid out for vacation you have already taken. However, it is a condition that you would otherwise have been entitled to unemployment benefit at the time of the vacation.
