Early retirement abroad

You can receive early retirement benefits even if you are abroad. Read what rules apply, how long you can receive early retirement outside Denmark, and what you need to remember before you leave.

Can you get early retirement abroad?

As a rule, you must be resident in Denmark (including the Faroe Islands and Greenland) to receive early retirement pension. However, there are exceptions where you can still receive early retirement abroad, depending on where you live or stay and for how long.

Early retirement if you move to another EEA country

You can receive early retirement pension if you settle in another country within the EEA.

We must withhold tax in the same way as if you lived in Denmark. Unless SKAT confirms that you are no longer liable for tax in Denmark.

Early retirement if you move to a country outside the EEA

You can receive early retirement during temporary stays in countries outside the EEA. You can receive early retirement benefits for a maximum of 91 days within a calendar year.

If you stay outside the EEA for more than 91 days in total, or if you take up permanent residence in a country outside the EEA, payment of early retirement benefits will stop. Payment can resume when you live in Denmark or another EEA country again.

You must notify us if you move to or temporarily stay in a country outside the EEA. You must inform us of the start date and end date.
